M.P. Gudie Hutchings will be holding town hall meetings on the recreational cod fishery in Port Saunders and St. Anthony on January 13th and January 16th. All members of the public are invited to attend and share their ideas for how the fishery should be managed for the upcoming season. After the discussions, Ms. Hutchings will be meeting with the office of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to relay the concerns of residents and share their ideas for what the management system should be for the upcoming season.
M.P. Hutchings stated, “I know that many people were frustrated with DFO’s proposal for a tag regime and that people felt they didn’t have a chance to provide input during the DFO consultations. I want to assure everyone that I have spoken with the Minister’s office and no decisions have been made yet.”
M.P. Hutchings went on to say, “This is an important issue for people and families throughout the riding. For many people, the recreational cod fishery is a source of food for the winter, and I believe it is also a part of who we are as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. So it is important that those who rely on this fishery have their concerns heard and are able to offer their ideas before any decision is made.”
